How to register a marriage or birth

Registering a marriage

Marriages conducted in the Republic of Cyprus are recognised by the United Kingdom. As Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth, there is no facility for registering your marriage here at the British High Commission, nor are records of marriages of British Nationals in Cyprus held by the High Commission.

In addition, as Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth there is no facility for depositing a copy of the marriage certificate at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom. There will therefore be no record of your marriage held in the UK.

If you wish to obtain information about marriage in Cyprus you must also contact the relevant local authority to find out the requirements that need to be met in order for the ceremony to go ahead.

It is currently not possible to enter a civil partnership on the Island.

Registering a birth

If your child is born outside the UK you can register the birth at the British High Commission in Nicosia. You don’t have to do this, but if you do your child will be given a British style birth certificate and the birth will be registered at the General Registry Office in the UK as well as in the consular district where the birth occurred. We recommend consular birth registration because it means you will be able to get extra copies of the certificate from the General Register Office in the future.

You will need to bring the following original documents plus one photocopy of each document with you:

  • completed application form
  • original local birth certificate of the child
  • original birth certificate of the parents
  • original marriage certificate of the parents
  • original British passports of the parent(s)
  • if held, the Naturalisation or Registration Certificates of the child and/or the parent(s)

NB: If the parent passing Nationality is born after 01 January 1983 you will also need to provide the birth certificate of their Mother or the birth certificate and marriage certificate of their Father i.e. the child’s Grandparent.

All documents must be written in English or accompanied by a certified copy and a certified translation from the Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office .
